SJVN Leads the Way with India’s First Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project

Powering the Future: SJVN Leads the Way with India’s First Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project

Posted on May 1, 2024

In a groundbreaking stride towards sustainability and innovation, SJVN, a leader in the energy sector, has marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of India’s first Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project. Situated at the esteemed 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh, this initiative sets a new standard for eco-friendly energy solutions in the nation’s industrial landscape.

The inauguration heralded the unveiling of a cutting-edge infrastructure comprising a 20Nm3/hr Electrolyzer and a 25kW Fuel Cell Capacity system. This state-of-the-art project not only demonstrates SJVN’s commitment to sustainability but also its pioneering spirit in harnessing the potential of green hydrogen.

What makes this project truly remarkable is its versatility. Serving as India’s first Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Generation Plant, it boasts the unique capability to cater to the High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) Coating Facility of NJHPS while simultaneously generating electricity through its 25kW capacity Fuel Cell. This dual functionality underscores the project’s efficiency and adaptability to diverse industrial needs.

At the heart of this innovative venture lies the utilization of renewable energy. The project produces hydrogen gas by splitting hydrogen and oxygen from water, facilitated by an alkaline electrolyzer with a capacity of 20Nm3/hr. Crucially, this process relies on renewable energy sourced from SJVN’s 1.31 MW Solar Power Plant located in Wadhal, Himachal Pradesh. By leveraging renewable resources, SJVN not only reduces carbon footprint but also paves the way for a sustainable energy future.

In terms of output, the Pilot Project is poised to make a significant impact. With the capacity to produce 14Kgs of Green Hydrogen daily during 8 hours of operation, it ensures a steady supply of eco-friendly energy. This green hydrogen is stored in six storage tanks with a total capacity of 12 m3 at 30 bar pressure, ensuring reliability and efficiency in energy distribution.

Beyond its immediate applications, the utilization of green hydrogen holds immense promise for the future. By employing it for HVOF Coating of turbine underwater parts, SJVN not only enhances operational efficiency but also minimizes environmental impact. Moreover, the electricity generated through its Fuel Cell adds another dimension to its utility, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy ecosystem.

As SJVN leads the charge with this pioneering initiative, it underscores the transformative power of innovation in the energy sector. By spearheading India’s first Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project, SJVN sets a precedent for sustainable development and technological advancement in the B2B landscape. With its unwavering commitment to green energy solutions, SJVN paves the way for a brighter, cleaner, and more sustainable future for industries across the nation.
